Another week, another slew of announced solar power projects that demonstrate both cutting edge innovation and strategic financing. There is nothing “start-upy” about them, as private equity firms, real estate developers, alternative lending and investment vehicles, and more turn their attention to renewable energy projects as a smart, high-growth investment.

These solar power projects and the technologies used to deploy them are likely to become one of the most prominent industries and asset classes for investment. As Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, Inc. recently shared in his annual letter: “The next 1,000 unicorns won’t be search engines or social media companies, they’ll be sustainable, scalable innovators – startups that help the world decarbonize and make the energy transition affordable for all consumers.”

FischTank PR works with renewable technology brands, developers and financiers to promote solar power projects as well as those in energy storage, hydrogen, water, utilities/grid edge solutions, virtual power plants and so many others. Here are a few solar power project news item that caught our eye this week:

New solar project coming to NW Louisiana, SWEPCO seeks approval

“Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) announced Tuesday plans to add 72.5 megawatts of solar energy by Dec. 1, 2024, through a power purchase agreement with Rocking R Solar, LLC. The proposal supports SWEPCO’s long-term plan of increasing its use of more clean energy sources, such as solar and wind.

In the filing submitted Friday, SWEPCO seeks approval of the proposal from the Louisiana Public Service Commission (LPSC).

The project – named Rocking R Solar Facility – will be located approximately 20 miles north of Shreveport near Hosston. The new facility will help fulfill SWEPCO’s commitment made to the LPSC in May 2020 to pursue up to 200 megawatts of solar generation in its service territory.  Construction on the solar farm is expected to be completed in late 2024.”

Danish energy fund to lead massive green hydrogen project in Spain

“On Tuesday, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners announced details of a partnership with Spanish companies Naturgy, Enagás and Fertiberia. Vestas, the Danish wind turbine manufacturer, is also involved.

The firms will work together on Catalina Phase I, which will be made up of 1.7 gigawatts of wind and solar in Aragon, northeast Spain, and a 500-megawatt electrolyzer able to generate more than 40,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.”

Colorado city offsets 100% municipal energy use with 1.67-MW solar project

“The city is the first in the Front Range of Colorado to offset all of its electricity usage for both city buildings and streetlights.

To help finance this project, Veregy and the city worked together to secure a Renewable and Clean Energy Initiative grant from the State of Colorado Department of Local Affairs for $1,350,000.”

Competitive Power Ventures given approval for Maryland solar farm

“During the 18-month construction period, CPV Backbone is expected to create more than 150 jobs and attract investment of between $210m and $290m through private infrastructure in the region.

It is also anticipated to generate around $2.7m in annual local tax revenues to benefit Garrett County.”

Solar farm proposed in the Poconos

“A remote wooded area between Spilt Rock Resort and Hickory Run State Park in Kidder Township could soon hold a massive commercial solar farm. Cypress Creek Renewables is behind the project that leased this land from Blue Ridge Real Estate.

‘It consists of 180,000 panels, as a 60-megawatt project, and will be sited on about 600 to 700 acres. Not all of that is going to be covered in panels, but that’s roughly the amount of area that would be inside of our fence,’ said David Weightman, a senior developer with Cypress Creek Renewable.”
